ROLE: Concept, design. Presented to NASA in Houston, Texas.

My background in industrial design and architecture has always been a passion. The chance to put that to use with astronauts was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. 

Performing experiments in the space shuttle is a difficult task. You must maintain precise control in zero-gravity. At the time, NASA had, believe it or not, rudimentary foot restraints. There were many issues including low comfort, limited sizing, and little mobility.

The following design works with any foot size, while ensuring secure fastening. Most importantly it gives the ability to adjust pitch and height all by just using your foot. So less thinking about your feet and more focus on being a space-cowboy.


 

 
    Flexibility & Stregnth  To accommodate all sizes, the length of the platform is 12.5” (equivalent to a men’s size 15). The width is also adjustable accommodating the most narrow width (2 13/16”). An elastic band stretches to accommodate smaller sizes. Between the band and the adjustable clip in the front, the foot is completely secured. —

    Pitch  There is a “toe button”, when pressed, allows for the angle to be adjusted. This is particularly useful when performing experiments to have hands-free control. —

   Height  The device also allows for customized height. To make this adjustment, an astronaut can simply rotate his / her foot. After pushing or pulling up, there is a pin that will catch on the desired height.   —
